Celebrate Federation Day!

MJ's Star Trek Portal and The UFP Galaxy International Star Trek Fan Association are very proud to announce the co-founding of the very first Federation Day celebration.

In the Star Trek universe, Federation Day, first mentioned in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Episode #117, "The Outcast,"  is celebrated every year on May 8th, in commemoration of the founding of the United Federation of Planets, when the articles of the Federation were ratified, thus forming the Federation in the year 2161. This is the beginning of the Federation and Starfleet as a whole, and every citizen on every member planet celebrates this day.

Previously, we had been observing Federation Day on February 22nd of every year based on information from "The Price of Freedom," a game which had been endorsed by Paramount, and published by Last Unicorn Games. This information had not specifically been contradicted by the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd Edition) or any other source, however, no other source except "The Price of Freedom" had specified the exact date. That is, until we picked up a copy of a book called "Star Trek - Star Charts" published in October, 2002, and also endorsed by Paramount. Star Trek - Star Charts specifies in the section entitled "United Federation of Planets Chart IV" on the last page of the book that Federation Day is celebrated on May 8th of every year. Since "Star Trek - Star Charts" is a newer publication endorsed by Paramount, we have chosen to change the date on which the campaign celebrates Federation Day as well. An additional factor in our decision is the fact that "The Price of Freedom" is no longer being published and the company which published it, Last Unicorn Games, went out of business sometime in 2001 (approximately). This makes "The Price of Freedom" an unreliable source with which we could argue whether one date or the other is more correct. Armed with all of this information, and examining it as deeply as possible, we have decided to change the date on which the Federation Day Campaign celebrates its anniversary to May 8th of every year.

What does it mean for you and me? Well, Michael Angelo, webmaster of MJ's Star Trek Portal, and Allen Johnson, webmaster of the UFP Galaxy web site, and Commander in Chief of the UFP Galaxy Star Trek Fan Association, conceived this celebration to bring together all Star Trek fans in appreciation of the phenomenon that is Star Trek. Since our friends at Captain.net seem to have lost their web site due to an unknown reason, we decided to start this campaign to pick up where they left off.
